A Jubilee of Faith, Healing and Witness: Archpastoral Visit of Archbishop Daniel to St. George the Great-Martyr Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Yardville, New Jersey

In the joyful and life-giving days following the glorious Feast of Feasts - Holy Pascha - the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America continue to proclaim with unwavering joy: “Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!” It is within this Paschal light that a cherished and spiritually enriching tradition unfolds - the archpastoral visitation of the hierarchs of the Church to parish communities, strengthening the faithful and affirming the unity of the Body of Christ.

Such was the case at St. George the Victorious Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Yardville, New Jersey, where His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel, visited the parish on the Sunday following Pascha to celebrate its patronal feast and, this year in particular, to mark a most profound and historic milestone - the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the parish temple.

Fifty years ago, the sacred temple of St. George was consecrated through the archpastoral ministry of Metropolitan Mstyslav (Skrypnyk) - a towering spiritual figure who would later become the spiritual father of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Half a century later, standing within the same holy temple, Archbishop Daniel - with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony – present day Spiritual father of the UOC of the USA - offered prayers and thanksgiving, embodying the living continuity of apostolic faith and episcopal ministry in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Deeply moved, the Archbishop reflected: “Today, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, I stand in a place sanctified by the prayers, sacrifices, and tears of generations before us. This holy temple is not merely a structure of brick and stone - it is a living witness to the presence of God among His people, a sanctuary where heaven and earth meet, and where the faithful have encountered Christ in the Holy Mysteries for fifty blessed years.”

Upon his arrival, Archbishop Daniel was warmly greeted by the children of the parish, who offered flowers - symbols of purity and resurrectional joy - and led the Archpastor into the temple. The Parish Board of Administration, led by President Mr. Anatoly Lesenskyj, presented the traditional offering of bread and salt, a sacred expression of hospitality deeply rooted in Ukrainian Christian culture.

The parish pastor, Very Rev. Fr. Petro Levko, together with concelebrating clergy - Very Rev. Fr. Taras Naumenko (St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Philadelphia, PA), Very Rev. Fr. Orest Poukhalski (Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Parish, Millville, NJ), and Very Rev. Fr. Wolodymyr Steblyna (St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Mission, Philadelphia, PA) - welcomed the hierarch and invited him to enter the holy altar and offer prayers for the founders of the parish, for the faithful, for the United States of America, and for Ukraine, which continues to endure the pain of ongoing war.

In his opening reflections, Archbishop Daniel also called attention to another solemn commemoration - the 55th anniversary of the repose of Metropolitan John (Theodorovych), the first Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, who arrived in America in 1924 and laid the spiritual and institutional foundations of the Church in the diaspora.

“We are the spiritual heirs of a sacred legacy,” the Archbishop proclaimed. “Metropolitan John built not only structures - but souls, not only institutions - but a living Church. Today, as we celebrate the jubilee of this parish, we also honor those who planted the seeds of faith in foreign soil, trusting that God would bring forth a harvest - and indeed, we are that harvest.”

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated with solemn beauty and profound reverence. The parish choir, under the direction of Ms. Oksana Yakovyna, lifted their voices in harmonious praise, while Deacon Andriy Akulenko of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ led the chanting of liturgical petitions.

Dozens of faithful - children, youth, and adults - approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Most Holy Eucharist, bearing witness to a vibrant and living faith: “You are not merely present in the church,” the Archbishop observed, “you are participants in the Mystical Supper of Christ. The Eucharist is not an obligation - it is life itself, for in receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, we become what we receive - the Body of Christ in the world.”

Preaching on the Gospel of the Sunday of the Paralytic (John 5:1-15), Archbishop Daniel offered a deeply moving reflection on compassion, attentiveness, and Christian responsibility: “For thirty-eight years, the man lay by the pool, surrounded by people, yet unseen. Each time the waters were stirred, someone else stepped ahead of him. How many today lie beside us - in our homes, our communities, even in our churches - waiting not only for healing, but for someone to notice them?”

He continued: “The tragedy of the paralytic was not only his physical condition - but the indifference of those around him. Christ saw him. Christ stopped. Christ spoke. And Christ healed. If we claim to follow Christ, we must learn to see as He sees - to recognize the suffering, the loneliness, the silent cries of those around us.”

And with pastoral urgency, he exhorted: “Never believe that your relationship with God can exist apart from your relationship with your neighbor. The path to the Kingdom passes through the heart of another human being. Faith without compassion is empty. Prayer without love is incomplete. The healing of the world begins when we stop passing by - and start kneeling beside those in need.”

Before the recitation of the Creed, Archbishop Daniel invited the faithful to revive an ancient and sacred tradition - the exchange of liturgical embrace and a Kiss of Peace:

“Let us greet one another, saying: Christ is among us! He is and always shall be! In this embrace, we proclaim not only words - but a way of life, a unity that transcends all divisions.”

The faithful turned to one another with heartfelt warmth, embodying the unity of the early Church.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel, with the blessing of Metropolitan Antony, presented certificates of recognition and Centennial Medals of the UOC of the USA to distinguished parishioners in gratitude for their sacrificial service and unwavering dedication.

Special and deeply moving recognition was expressed to the pastor of the parish, the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Petro Levko, on the occasion of a significant jubilee - the 35th anniversary of his devoted service in the Holy Priesthood. In the presence of clergy, parishioners, and guests of the celebration, Archbishop Daniel addressed the honoree with words of profound gratitude, emphasizing not only the number of years of service, but above all their spiritual depth, sacrificial character, and pastoral love.

“A priest is one who offers himself in sacrifice - day by day, year by year - for the people entrusted to him by God. This calling is not measured merely in years, but in a heart capable of compassion, of listening, of guiding, and of loving. Throughout these thirty-five years, Father Petro, you have been not only a celebrant of the Holy Mysteries, but a spiritual father, a mentor, and a living example of faith for many generations of the faithful.”

The Archbishop especially emphasized that true priestly ministry is never a solitary path, for alongside the pastor stands his family, sharing in both the joys and the challenges of the vocation. With particular warmth, he acknowledged the wife of the honoree - Dobrodijka Maria - who throughout many years has been a faithful co-laborer in ministry, a quiet yet indispensable pillar of support for her priest-husband.

“Behind every devoted pastor stands a heart that prays with him, supports him in moments of trial, and rejoices with him in moments of spiritual victory. Dobrodijka Maria, your sacrificial love, patience, and faithfulness are an inseparable part of this ministry. You are a participant in this sacred mission, and the Church is grateful to you for your quiet yet powerful witness of love.”

Archbishop Daniel further noted that Father Petro’s ministry has become a source of spiritual inspiration for the entire parish family, which has grown under his pastoral care, strengthened in faith and unity.

“A parish is not merely a community - it is a living family in Christ. And you, Father Petro, together with Dobrodijka Maria, have become the heart of this family, uniting people around the Holy Chalice, around prayer, and around love for God and neighbor.”

Concluding his remarks, the Archbishop offered prayers for the honoree and his family, asking the Lord to grant them strength, good health, many years, and continued blessed service in the vineyard of Christ.

This moment became not only a recognition of a jubilee, but a powerful testimony that the priestly vocation is a path of sacrificial love - one that is shared by the entire family and bears fruit in the life of the whole Church.

Following the Liturgy, the faithful gathered in the parish hall for a festive jubilee luncheon, lovingly prepared by the Sisterhood under the leadership of Mrs. Svitlana Ivasiuk. The Archbishop was presented with a bouquet of yellow and blue roses - symbols of Ukraine’s enduring hope, peace, and heavenly calling.

Children of the parish school delighted those in attendance with songs and poetry, reflecting the living continuity of faith across generations. Joy abounded as even a simple ice cream truck became a moment of shared delight - reminding all that Christian life is not devoid of joy, but filled with it.

In a deeply touching moment, the parish community presented Archbishop Daniel with an icon of St. Andrew the First-Called, commemorating the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the Holy Priesthood, celebrated in May 2026. Through poetic tributes and heartfelt words (written by Oleksandra Ilin), the faithful expressed their love and gratitude.

As the day drew to a close, the faithful departed renewed - spiritually strengthened, joyfully united, and deeply aware that they are part of a sacred story still being written.

“The Church lives,” Archbishop Daniel concluded, “where faith is lived, where love is practiced, and where Christ is encountered. May this jubilee not be a conclusion - but a beginning - a new chapter of faith, service, and witness to the Risen Lord.”

Indeed, in the Paschal light of Christ’s Resurrection, the community of St. George in Yardville continues its journey - faithful, vibrant, and ever proclaiming: Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

Ювілей віри, зцілення і свідчення: Архіпастирський візит Архієпископа Даниїла до Української Православної Парафії Святого Великомученика Георгія в Ярдвіллі, штат Нью-Джерсі

У світлі радісних і животворних днів після славного Свята свят - Святої Пасхи - вірні Української Православної Церкви Сполучених Штатів Америки продовжують із незмінною духовною радістю проголошувати: «Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!» Саме в цьому пасхальному світлі розкривається благословенна традиція - архіпастирські відвідини ієрархами Церкви парафіяльних громад, які зміцнюють вірних у вірі та утверджують єдність Тіла Христового.

Так сталося і в Українській Православній Парафії Святого Великомученика Георгія в Ярдвіллі, штат Нью-Джерсі, де Його Високопреосвященство Архієпископ Даниїл відвідав громаду в неділю після Пасхи, щоб розділити радість престольного свята та особливо відзначити знаменну історичну подію - 50-ту річницю освячення парафіяльного храму.

П’ятдесят років тому цей святий храм був освячений архіпастирським служінням Митрополита Мстислава (Скрипника) - видатного духовного провідника, який згодом став духовним батьком Православної Церкви в Україні. Через пів століття, стоячи у цьому ж святому храмі, Архієпископ Даниїл, з благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, возніс молитви подяки, являючи живу спадкоємність апостольської віри та єпископського служіння в Українській Православній Церкві.

Архієпископ зазначив: «Сьогодні, благодаттю Святого Духа, я стою на місці, освяченому молитвами, жертвами і сльозами поколінь, які були перед нами. Цей святий храм - не просто споруда з каменю і цегли, але живе свідчення присутності Бога серед Його народу, місце, де небо зустрічається із землею, і де вірні протягом п’ятдесяти благословенних років зустрічали Христа у Святих Тайнах».

По прибутті Архієпископа тепло зустріли діти парафії, підносячи квіти - символи чистоти та пасхальної радості - і провели Архіпастиря до храму. Парафіяльна управа на чолі з головою паном Анатолієм Лесенським піднесла традиційний хліб-сіль - священний знак гостинності, глибоко вкорінений в українській християнській традиції.

Настоятель парафії, протоієрей Петро Левко, разом із співслужачим духовенством - протоієреєм Тарасом Науменком (настоятелем Українського Православного Кафедрального Собору св. Володимира Великого у Філадельфії, Пенсильванія), протоієреєм Орестом Пугальським (настоятелем Українського Православного храму святих Пеьра і Павлв у Мілвілл, Нью-Джерсі) та протоієреєм Володимиром Стеблиною (настоятелем Української Православної місії св. Юрія Побідоносця у Філадельфії, Пенсильванія) - привітали ієрарха та запросили його до храму, щоб звершити молитви за засновників парафії, за вірних, за Сполучені Штати Америки та за Україну, яка нині терпить від болю війни.

У своєму слові Архієпископ також звернув увагу на іншу важливу дату - 55-ту річницю упокоєння Митрополита Іоанна (Теодоровича), першого Предстоятеля УПЦ США, який прибув до Америки у 1924 році і заклав духовні та організаційні основи Церкви в діаспорі.

«Ми є духовними спадкоємцями священної спадщини, - наголосив Архієпископ. - Митрополит Іоанн будував не лише структури, але душі; не лише установи, але живу Церкву. Сьогодні, святкуючи ювілей цієї парафії, ми вшановуємо тих, хто посіяв зерна віри на чужині, довіряючи Богові, що Він принесе плід - і справді, ми є цим плодом».

Божественна Літургія звершувалася з особливою урочистістю та благоговінням. Парафіяльний хор під керівництвом пані Оксани Яковини підніс молитовний спів, а диякон Андрій Акуленко зі Свято-Андріївської Української Православної церкви-пам'ятника в Саут-Баунд-Бруку очолював виголоси літургійних прохань та єктеній.

Десятки вірних - діти, молодь і дорослі - приступили до Святої Чаші, приймаючи Пречисті Тіло і Кров Христові, свідчачи про живу віру:

«Ви не просто присутні в храмі, - зазначив Архієпископ, - ви є учасниками Тайної Вечері Христової. Євхаристія - це не обов’язок, це саме життя, бо приймаючи Тіло і Кров Христові, ми стаємо тим, що приймаємо - Тілом Христовим у світі».

У проповіді на Євангеліє Неділі про розслабленого (Ін. 5:1–15) Архієпископ Даниїл наголосив на співчутті та духовній відповідальності: «Тридцять вісім років ця людина лежала біля купелі - серед людей, але залишалася непоміченою. Кожного разу, коли збурювалася вода, хтось інший випереджав її. Скільки й сьогодні поруч із нами - у наших домах, громадах і навіть у храмах - тих, хто чекає не лише зцілення, але щоб хтось їх побачив?»

«Трагедія цієї людини була не лише в її хворобі, але й у байдужості інших. Христос побачив. Христос зупинився. Христос промовив. І Христос зцілив. Якщо ми слідуємо за Ним - ми повинні навчитися бачити так, як бачить Він».

«Ніколи не думайте, що ваші відносини з Богом можуть існувати окремо від ваших відносин із ближнім. Шлях до Царства проходить через серце іншої людини. Віра без співчуття - порожня. Молитва без любові - неповна».

Перед виголошенням Символу віри Архієпископ закликав до відновлення древньої традиції миру: «Привітаймо один одного словами: Христос посеред нас! Є і буде! У цьому обіймі ми свідчимо про єдність, яка перевищує всі людські поділи».

Після завершення Літургії Архієпископ Даниїл, з благословення Митрополита Антонія, вручив подячні грамоти та ювілейні медалі УПЦ США парафіянам за їхню відданість і служіння.

Особливе і зворушливе визнання було висловлено настоятелю парафії, протоієрею Петру Левку, з нагоди визначного ювілею - 35-річчя його самовідданого служіння у святому священстві. У присутності духовенства, парафіян та гостей свята Архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до ювіляра зі словами глибокої вдячності, підкреслюючи не лише тривалість років служіння, але передусім їх духовну глибину, жертовність і пастирську любов.

«Священник - це той, хто приносить себе в жертву - день за днем, рік за роком - за людей, довірених йому Богом. Це покликання, яке не вимірюється лише роками, але серцем, здатним співстраждати, слухати, наставляти і любити. Протягом цих тридцяти п’яти років, отче Петре, Ви були не лише звершувачем Святих Таїнств, але духовним батьком, наставником і живим прикладом віри для багатьох поколінь вірних».

Архієпископ особливо наголосив, що справжнє священниче служіння ніколи не є самотнім шляхом, адже поруч із пастирем завжди стоїть його родина, яка розділяє всі радості і труднощі покликання. З особливою теплотою було згадано дружину ювіляра - добродійку Марію, яка протягом багатьох років є вірною співтрудівницею у служінні, тихим, але надзвичайно важливим стовпом підтримки свого чоловіка-священника.

«За кожним ревним пастирем стоїть серце, яке молиться разом із ним, підтримує його у хвилини випробувань і радіє разом із ним у хвилини духовних перемог. Добродійко Маріє, Ваша жертовна любов, терпіння і відданість є невід’ємною частиною цього служіння. Ви є співучасницею цієї священної місії, і Церква вдячна Вам за Ваш тихий, але могутній подвиг любові».

Архієпископ Даниїл також підкреслив, що служіння отця Петра стало джерелом духовного натхнення для всієї парафіяльної родини, яка зростала під його пастирською опікою, зміцнюючись у вірі та єдності.

«Парафія - це не лише громада, це жива сім’я у Христі. І Ви, отче Петре, разом із добродійкою Марією, стали серцем цієї родини, об’єднуючи людей навколо Святої Чаші, навколо молитви, навколо любові до Бога і ближнього».

На завершення свого слова Архієпископ підніс молитву за ювіляра та його родину, прохаючи Господа дарувати їм кріпість, здоров’я, довголіття і подальше благословенне служіння на ниві Христовій.

Цей момент став не лише відзначенням ювілею, але справжнім свідченням того, що священниче покликання - це шлях жертовної любові, який розділяється всією родиною і приносить плоди у житті всієї Церкви.

Після богослужіння всі зібралися у парафіяльній залі на святковий обід, приготований сестринством під керівництвом пані Світлани Івасюк. Архієпископу було вручено букет жовто-блакитних троянд - символів надії, миру і небесного покликання України.

Діти парафіяльної школи потішили присутніх піснями і віршами, а радість свята доповнив навіть приїзд морозивної машини - як знак того, що християнське життя сповнене радості.

Зворушливим моментом стало вручення Архієпископу ікони святого апостола Андрія Первозванного з нагоди 25-річчя його священничого служіння, а також поетичні привітання від парафіянпід проводом пані Олександри Ільїн.

На завершення святкування всі розійшлися духовно укріпленими, оновленими і натхненними.

«Церква живе там, де віра здійснюється, де любов діє, і де людина зустрічає Христа. Нехай цей ювілей стане не завершенням, а початком - нової сторінки віри, служіння і свідчення про Воскреслого Господа».

Воістину, у світлі Христового Воскресіння громада святого Юрія продовжує свій шлях - жива, вірна і сповнена надії, проголошуючи: Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!
