President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko Visited Washington, DC

 

On September 18, 2014, the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko concluded his working visit to the United States of America. During his visit to the nation’s capital, the President of Ukraine met with President Barack Obama.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and upon the invitation of the US Government, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA was represented at the meetings with the President of Ukraine by His Grace Bishop Daniel, President of the Consistory of the UOC of the USA and Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Steliak, pastor of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Silver Spring, MD, Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of Nativity of the Birth-Giver of God Ukrainian Orthodox parish in South Plainfield, NJ, Ms. Hanja Cherniak, the head of the Audit Committee of the UOC of the USA and Pani-matka Martha Steliak.

The delegation of the UOC of the USA was invited to witness the historic address of the Ukrainian President at the Joint Session of the United States Congress. Addressing the US politicians, President Poroshenko stated: “…Standing here, I am grateful – and fully aware that this honor goes not to me, but to the people of Ukraine – those brave men and women who are today on the forefront of the global fight for democracy! Allow me speak to you on their behalf... “Live free or die!” – was one of the mottos of the American Revolutionary War. “Live free or die!” – was the spirit on the revolutionary Maidan during the dramatic winter months of 2014. “Live free or die!” are the words of Ukrainian soldiers standing on the line of freedom in this war. “Live free!” – must be the answer, with which Ukraine comes out of this war. “Live free!” – must be the message Ukraine and America send to the world, while standing together in this time of enormous challenge…”

Following the official address and upon the invitation of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives John Boehner, His Grace Bishop Daniel participated in the official reception in honor of President of Ukraine. At the reception, President Poroshenko exchanged brief comments with Bishop Daniel and Metropolitan Stefan Soroka of Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and the Ukrainian-Americans in attendance.

Also within the framework of his working visit to the USA President Poroshenko met with representatives of the United States government.

In Washington, President of Ukraine had a meeting with Vice President of the United States Joseph Biden. Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to Joseph Biden for his constant attention to Ukraine and significant efforts of the U.S. Administration aimed at finding the ways of peaceful settlement of the situation in the Donbas. The parties noted the importance of supporting further active political dialogue for prompt reaction to the events and prevention of new escalation of the situation. The interlocutors negotiated the possibility of providing additional financial assistance by the USA to Ukraine and the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in defense and energy sphere on the eve of winter period. Also, the parties announced the arrival of the U.S. Treasury Secretary to Ukraine to provide broader financial support.

During his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the Head of State expressed gratitude for the continuous support of the United States. The parties discussed the results of the agreements on the ceasefire regime achieved in Minsk and the steps of the Ukrainian President aimed at the implementation of the Peace plan. The interlocutors negotiated the enhancement of cooperation in the sphere of security and defense, as well as further macro-financial assistance for Ukraine.

In Washington, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko received a prestigious award “Global Citizen Award” from reputable NGO “Atlantic Council of the United States”. Addressing the international expert audience of the Atlantic Council of the United States, the President noted that he dedicated the given award to those who had given their lives in a struggle for freedom and democracy. Petro Poroshenko stated that the support of the United States was crucially important for Ukraine currently. “Ukraine is in danger. Our enemy is strong and better prepared. But with your support and power of spirit, we will win in this struggle, for the truth is with us,” the President said. “We need a consolidated supported from our partners to repel the attack on our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Head of State noted. The President also answered the questions of NGO members.
